To kick off its month-long celebration of girls sports, USA TODAY High School Sports launched its latest “Best Of” contest on Thursday. The ninth contest in the series will crown one high school girls athletics program as the country’s best.
The online contest’s first round will determine the top high school girls sports program in each of the 50 states and Washington, D.C. Five programs in each were chosen – based upon the combined strength of each of the program’s varsity girls teams – to participate in the contest.
Voting to decide Ohio’s top girls sports program is currently underway and will continue until noon on May 9.
Hathaway Brown School, with its stellar field hockey squad and nationally known hoops team, and Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School, headlined by its dominant gymnastics squad, represent Northeast Ohio in the contest.
The state winners and two wild cards will advance to the contest’s regional round, which is slated to run from May 12-20. The regional winners and two wild cards will advance to the contest’s national round, which will take place from May 21-30. The championship program – as selected by popular vote – will be crowned at 2 p.m. on May 30.
Represent the area’s high school female student-athletes by voting for both the Blazers and Bees in hopes that both elite sports programs will advance to the contest’s regional round.
