Washington County and Calhoun entered the GHSA AAA state championship unbeaten. Calhoun stayed unbeaten, winning the AAA state title 27-20 over the Golden Hawks.
In the first half, both teams battled back and forth trying to produce a knockout blow. WaCo ended the half just up by a field goal, 17-14. WaCo’s AJ Gray swatted down a pass in the end zone that kept Calhoun from finishing the half with a go-ahead touchdown.
Gray also scored both of WaCo’s touchdown’s in the first half.
The second half moved in Calhoun’s favor as they applied more pressure to Gray who continued to play both offense and defense.
A late third quarter fumble for WaCo kept them from capitalizing on a punt return into Calhoun territory by WaCo’s Darius Tucker.
Calhoun finally dented the WaCo defense with a flea flicker pass that gave them the lead 27-20 in the fourth quarter.
In the final minutes of the fourth quarter, Gray struggled to make a 4th down conversion but came up a couple yards short. Calhoun took over on downs and ran out the clock.
The defeat gave WaCo it’s second runner-up trophy in two years after losing in 2013 to Buford.
