The Riverdale and Blackman soccer teams will play for the District 7-AAA championship at 7 p.m. today at The Stadium Field at the Richard Siegel Soccer Complex.
It’s the second meeting between the two schools on the season. Riverdale defeated Blackman 2-0 in the two team’s only other match on March 25, which was the first district game of the year for either team.
“It doesn’t matter what happened in the regular season,” Riverdale coach Ali Arman said. “Everybody knows you’ve got 80 minutes (in the postseason) and it’s anybody’s game.
“We’ve got eliminate mistakes and take advantage of our opportunities.”
The winner will host the runner up from District 8-AAA in the Region 4-AAA semifinals on Tuesday. The loser will travel to the 8-AAA champion. Tullahoma will play at Columbia for the District 8-AAA title today.
Top-seeded Riverdale (9-2-2) advanced to the championship game with a 1-0 victory against Siegel in the district semifinals on Tuesday.
Blackman (13-4-2) eked out a 4-2 shootout victory against Oakland in the semifinals to clinch its spot in the district final.
“We’ve just got bring the momentum that we got (on Tuesday) into (tonight),” Blackman goalie Jordan Bennett said.
It’s also a rematch of the 2011 district title game when both team’s current class of seniors were freshmen, which Blackman won 2-1.
District 8-A/AA: Central Magnet (11-0-2) plays Merrol Hyde (11-3-2) at 6 p.m. today in the District 8-A/AA championship at DeKalb County.
Central Magnet is the defending district champion and defeated Merrol Hyde 3-2 in the regular season in Hendersonville.
The Tigers boast a regular season record of 42 wins, 5 losses and 4 draws (ties) in past 4 years.
