Junior designated hitter Ty Hawkins’s ground-rule double with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Max Hawkins from second base with the winning run and Manasquan pitchers struck out 17 hitters in a 2-1 Shore Conference Class A Central victory over Raritan on Wednesday.
Freshman Tom Sheehan struck out five and did not allow a base runner over the final 21⁄3 innings to pick up the win.
Manasquan starting pitcher Marc Galvan struck out 10 over the first four innings. Ty Hawkins drove in both of Manasquan’s runs. Max Hawkins was 1-for-2 with two walks and two stolen bases. Bruce Strickland was 3-for-4 with a double and scored a run for Raritan (0-1, 0-1).
MANCHESTER 1, BARNEGAT 0: Sophomore Ryan Vanderham’s two-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Marc Edwards with the winning run as the Hawks (1-1, 1-0) defeated the Bengals (0-1, 0-1) in a Class B South game.
Manchester’s Devin Tomei pitched a complete-game two-hitter. He struck out seven and walked five.
Barnegat sophomore Jason Groome pitched two-hitter ball over the first seven innings. He struck out 11.
COLTS NECK 2, MARLBORO 1: Tyler Kay’s single to right-center with two out in the bottom of the fourth scored Tyler Kapuscinski with the go-ahead run and capped a two-run rally as the Cougars (1-0, 1-0) defeated the Mustangs (0-1, 0-1) in a Class A North game.
With Marlboro ahead 1-0, shortstop Paul Marinello began the fourth-inning rally by walking with one out. He moved to third on a single up the middle by Kapuscinski. Kapuscinski stole second before junior catcher Jordan Gonzalez drove in Marinello with the tying run with a ground out to short.
Robbie Warendorf picked up the win by pitching 42⁄3 innings of three-hit ball.
HOWELL 4, FREEHOLD TWP. 3: Dan Matrisciano and Andrew Larsen both scored in the bottom of the sixth on an errant throw to the plate as the Rebels (2-0, 1-0) scored three times in the sixth to rally for a Class A North win over the Patriots (1-1, 0-1), No. 10 in the Asbury Park Press Preseason Top 10.
Zach Loroesh pitched a complete-game six-hitter to pick up the win.
Rob Napolitano had a solo home run in the third for Howell. Nick Cardace and Joe Silvestrone each went 2-for-3 for Freehold Township.
SJ VIANNEY 6, SHORE 4: Senior first baseman Joe Rotelli hit a two-run homer in the top of the first and senior Anthony LaVigne had a two-run double in a four-run fourth as the No. 5 Lancers (2-0, 2-0 defeated the Blue Devils (0-1, 0-1) in a Class A Central game.
Senior second baseman Andrew Schulz went 2-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and scored a run for Shore.
RB CATHOLIC 3, RUMSON-FH 0: Senior left-hander ack Kissinger struck out nine and pitched a three-hitter and the No. 1 Caseys (2-0, 2-0) scored three unearned runs in the top of the fourth as they defeated the Bulldogs (0-2, 0-2) in a Class A Central game.
Senior catcher Mike Alescio went 3-for-4 with a double for Red Bank Catholic.
RED BANK 7, NEPTUNE 2: A.J. Forgione struck out eight and pitched two-hit ball over the first five innings as the Bucs (1-0, 1-0) defeated the Scarlet Fliers (0-1, 0-1) in a Class B North game and gave first-year head coach Nick Tucker his first win.
