THE WINNER: Kayla Andrews
School: Richland (Wash.)
Athletic achievement: She posted a 20-2 record in the circle along with a 1.21 ERA this past season, leading the Bombers (25-3) to a third-place finish in the Class 4A state tournament. Andrews struck out 181 batters and walked just 17 in 121.1 innings pitched. At the plate, the two-time First Team All-Conference selection batted .604 with seven home runs, 48 RBI and a .941 slugging percentage. She banged out 11 doubles, scored 18 runs and posted a .643 on-base percentage.
Academic excellence: Andrews has maintained a 3.13 GPA.
Exemplary character: She has volunteered locally at the Tri-Cities Cancer Center in Kennewick, at an eldercare facility and as a youth softball coach.
“Kayla Andrews plays a big role in Richland’s success on the field,” said Kate Keyes, head coach of Walla Walla. “She is the best pitcher in our league and she also supports her defense with a big bat.”
THE FUTURE: Andrews has signed with Mercer University in Georgia.
