Wednesday’s stars of the day
Brian Cook, Pearl River boys track: The senior won the 3,200 at the Section 1 state qualifier in 9:05.14, the fastest time in the state and No. 2 in the country this season.
Chontel Fils, Albertus Magnus girls basketball: Fils scored 15 points and had 10 rebounds in the host Falcons’ 48-41 win over Somers in the Class A quarterfinals.
Rodney Lanay, Peekskill girls basketball: Lanay scored 22 points as Peekskill topped visiting Ardsley 64-57 in the Class A quarterfinals.
Timmy McCauley, Panas boys basketball: The senior guard had 25 points, three rebounds and two assists in the Panthers’ 63-51 win against visiting Beacon in the Class A quarterfinals.
Kristen McLaughlin, Tappan Zee girls basketball: McLaughlin scored 25 points as No. 9 Tappan Zee nearly upset host and No. 1 Beacon, falling 60-57 in overtime in the Class A quarterfinals.
Salim Green and Chris Picar, Rye Country Day boys basketball: Green had 27 points for RCDS in its 73-68 win over visiting Hopkins in the quarterfinals of the Fairchester Athletic Association tournament. Picar added 20 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks.
Liam Purdy, North Rockland boys track: The senior won the 1,000 meters at the Section 1 state qualifier in 2:25.80, the fastest time in the country this season and third best in state history.
Thursday’s must-see event
Girls basketball: Arlington at Clarkstown South, 5 p.m. The Vikings put their unblemished 19-0 mark on the line in a Class AA quarterfinal with a berth at the County Center at stake.
