If the opening week of the high school football season taught us anything, it is this: settle in. It’s going to be a fun ride.
Warren Central proved its mettle in a 12-9 overtime win at Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference rival Center Grove; Ben Davis proved its offense is the real deal in a 44-19 pasting of Cathedral; programs like Pike, Southport, Bishop Chatard and Carmel appear ready to reload.
My predictions were nearly up to midseason form in Week 1. I went 32-11 (74.4 percent) for the week, missing on Bishop Chatard’s win over Brebeuf Jesuit, Franklin Central over Decatur Central and Greenwood over Perry Meridian, among others.
There is a twist to this week’s pick ’em column, as I take on a challenger. Lawrence Central junior Kyle Guy, a standout on the basketball team, will attempt to take me down. Here’s a look at six of the best area games on Friday (kickoffs 7 p.m. unless noted). We’ll have all of the area picks on the Preps blog at IndyStar.com:
Ben Davis (1-0) at Avon (1-0): There’s a little added juice to this Westside game following Avon’s 38-31 comeback win over Lawrence Central last week at Lucas Oil Stadium. This assignment, however, will be even more difficult. Class 6A second-ranked Ben Davis had no trouble in a 44-19 season-opening win over Cathedral as Kyle Castner passed for 350 yards. No. 10 Avon can send a message with a win. Ben Davis 42, Avon 28.
Kyle Guy: Ben Davis 42, Avon 17.
Pike (1-0) at Fishers (1-0): You have to love these new nonconference matchups for the Hoosier Crossroads Conference this season. Class 6A fifth-ranked Fishers had to rally for a 32-20 win over North Central last week, while No. 6 Pike destroyed Brownsburg 59-19 as Beau Trudeau passed for six touchdowns. This could be a fun one. Fishers 35, Pike 34.
Kyle Guy: Pike 35, Fishers 21.
Cathedral (0-1) at Warren Central (1-0): Class 5A third-ranked Cathedral looks to bounce back from last week’s loss to Ben Davis in just about the toughest way possible. Class 6A third-ranked Warren Central has now won eight consecutive games going back to last season and five in a row by a touchdown or less after a 12-9 overtime win over Center Grove. Expect the Warriors to be better offensively than they showed in the opener. Warren Central 24, Cathedral 14.
Kyle Guy: Warren Central 35, Cathedral 14.
Southport (1-0) at Westfield (1-0): These were both surprise teams a year ago and are off and running again. Westfield, the Class 5A runner-up last year, is ranked No. 1 after Cathedral’s loss. Southport handled Roncalli 27-13 for its 10th consecutive regular season win. Southport 31, Westfield 21.
Kyle Guy: Southport 27, Westfield 17.
Cardinal Ritter (1-0) at Lutheran (1-0): Class 2A top-ranked Ritter allowed more than 400 rushing yards last week in a 41-40 overtime win over Monrovia. Lutheran, ranked No. 7 in Class A, hasn’t come closer than 32 points in four previous tries against the Raiders. Cardinal Ritter 45, Lutheran 31.
Kyle Guy: Cardinal Ritter 41, Lutheran 35.
Carmel (1-0) at Louisville Trinity (0-1): This a great test for the Class 6A top-ranked Greyhounds, who received a strong first start from junior quarterback Michael Viktrup (146 rushing yards) in a 14-7 win over Hamilton Southeastern. Trinity won last year’s game, 42-35. Trinity 27, Carmel 24.
Kyle Guy: Carmel 28, Trinity 24.
