THE WINNER: Mychal Johnson
School: St. Joseph Central Catholic (Huntington, W.Va.)
Athletic achievement: She led the Lady Irish to a 20-3 record and a berth in the Class A state tournament, scheduled to begin March 12. Johnson averaged 20.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 3.1 steals through 23 games. The state’s reigning Gatorade West Virginia Girls Basketball Player of the Year, she is ranked as the nation’s No. 17 recruit by BlueStar Basketball and has guided St. Joseph Central to three state championships en route to an 83-17 record as a four-year varsity starter.
Academic excellence: Johnson has maintained a 3.59 GPA.
Exemplary character: A member of the National Honor Society, she has volunteered locally on behalf of multiple community service initiatives in association with her church youth group.
“Mychal Johnson is a dynamic player,” said Keith Baisch, head coach at Mercy (Louisville, Ky). “She can absolutely do it all on the court. She shoots the 3-pointer extremely well, can really get to the basket and she has a nice pull-up jumper as well.”
THE FUTURE: Johnson has signed with Notre Dame.
