THE WINNER: Kentre Grier
School: South Charleston (W.Va.)
Weight: 170 pounds
Athletic achievement: He has led the Black Eagles to an 11-2 record and a berth in the Class AAA state championship game against Charleston (W.Va.) Capital, scheduled for Dec. 6. At the time of his selection, Grier had passed for 3,339 yards and 46 touchdowns, completing 205-of-290 attempts (71 percent) against 10 interceptions. A 2014 Kennedy Award Finalist, he also rushed for 1,184 yards and 13 touchdowns on 149 carries through 13 games.
Academic excellence: Grier has maintained a B average.
Exemplary character: A devoted member of his church community, he has volunteered locally on behalf of an annual food drive and as a youth football and basketball coach.
“Kentre Grier possesses a willingness to learn and be the best at his position,” said South Charleston head coach Donnie Mays. “He is the smartest quarterback that I have ever coached. His desire to be the best quarterback is what has led to his successes on the football field. Still, he doesn’t stop there. He strives in the classroom and is an outstanding young man.”
THE FUTURE: Grier will be a senior next fall.
