Westfield Field Hockey: 'Year of Patience'

CHANTILLY, Va. (WUSA 9) — The reigning 2013 field hockey state champs of Westfield High School prepare for the upcoming season with a young team.

“We are coming off of the best season that Westfield has ever had,” coach Starr Karl said.

She said six starters graduated last year. This season, Karl said there are four freshman on the team and out of the four, three will be starting players.

“This is going to be a year of patience,” Karl said. “We are going to take it one game at a time.”

Karl said the team is working on fundamentals. She said the players set objectives and focus on how to achieve those goals.

“I don’t look to the end,” Karl said. “Everyone wants to be champions. We have to bring our ‘A’ game.”

On Wednesday, Karl said the team will be going to Virginia Beach to train and play scrimmages. She said the Bulldogs will play the team it beat in the finals last season, First Colonial. She also said the team will scrimmage Frank W. Cox High School.

“I like to play the best and learn from our mistakes,” Karl said.

She said the team is excited for the season.

Westfield’s first game is against South County High School at 7:30 p.m., Aug. 27.
