WIAA boys swimming roundup: Plymouth wins sectional title

By

Plymouth’s boys swimming team may have had just one individual champion at the Saturday WIAA Division 2 sectional meet it hosted, but the Panthers’ depth rose to the top.

Plymouth edged Chilton/Brillion/Valders to win the D2 sectional championship as a team. The Panthers had 355 team points, to 337 to CBV. Grafton was a distant third.

Plymouth coach Clare Sedlacek said based on seeding, BCV, which beat the Panthers for the Eastern Wisconsin Conference title just last week, was expected to win the meet by 41 points.

“That’s a lot of points. But you never know,” Sedlacek said.

“We just kept coming up huge. Everybody had great swims. Literally, everybody,” she said. “These guys came to swim like I’ve never seen a swim team come.”

Plymouth junior Lucas Collard won the sectional title in the 200 free, pulling out the win in a personal-best 1:56.55. Only sectional champs automatically qualify for State, with additional qualifiers announced today.

Kiel senior Noah Draxler took second in the 100 backstroke (58.36).

Also for Plymouth, sophomore Ryan Holec was fourth in the 50 free (23.36), followed by teammates Collard (23.85) and sophomore Chaz Halderson (23.99) and Draxler (24.22).

Plymouth senior Matthew Matz was third in the 100 free, in 51.75, followed by teammates Holec (51.75) and Bradley Hetlet (53.58).

Halderson was also fourth in the 100 breast (1:08.38).

Two of Plymouth’s relays finished second — the 200 free relay of Collard, Halderson, Holec and Matz, and the 400 free relay of Collard, Zach Gambrell, Holec and Matz.

Plymouth’s junior Evan Klemme was the top local finisher in diving competition on Friday, taking third with a 301.35.

The Division 2 state meet is in Madison on Friday.
