WIAA girls state tournament: Coaches, teams ready for state action

An intriguing matchup will kick off the WIAA State girls basketball tournament when a pair of storied programs square off Thursday at the Resch Center in Ashwaubenon.

The first game features the past two Division 5 state champions, when Assumption (2013) and Heritge Christian (2012) hit the floor. Following up is another tussle of storied programs in a loaded D5 field as Owen-Withee meets Bareveld in the other semifinal. O-W and Barneveld have combined for 18 state tournament appearances. Barneveld has won four championships and O-W has been the runner-up four times.

And in Division 3, the top two teams in the state, according to the final Associated Press poll, clash in a state semifinal, as No. 1 Neillsville and second-ranked Brodhead are a combined 52-0 this season.
