The Sheboygan North/South gymnastics team finished 10th Friday in the 10-team WIAA Division 1 Team State Gymnastics Championships in Wisconsin Rapids.
The team finished less than a point behind ninth-place Eau Claire Memorial/North
Getting to State was a good start for a freshman-laden team that promises to return plenty of talent next season. It was the first time Sheboygan advanced to Team State since 2012, and was the first time the state made it this far under second-year coach Drew Jensen.
Franklin/Muskego/Oak Creek/Whitnall earned its fourth straight Division 1 gymnastics team state championship after just barely edging Burlington/Badger/Catholic Central/Wilmot Union.
The Franklin c-op finished Friday’s meet with 147.2850, to Burlington’s 147.2330. Arrowhead (146.4840) finished in a not-too-distant third place.
Two Sheboygan gymnasts are expected to compete today in the individual state competition. Juniors Calie Kaiser and Jenna Schaefer are making their third straight trips to the individual championships.
Both girls earned sectional titles — Kaiser in the balance beam and floor exercise and Schaefer in the uneven bars — and both also qualified to compete in the all-around.
Kaiser medaled last season on the balance beam despite injuring both ankles earlier in the season.
Jensen said earlier this week she expects a good bar routine from Schaefer, and a good floor exercise from Kaiser.
