WIAA softball: Lutheran advances, tops Brillion


No. 6 Manitowoc Lutheran jumped out to 9-2 lead after the first inning and cruised to a 19-7 home victory in five innings over No. 7 Brillion on Wednesday in the WIAA State Softball Division 3 regional semifinal.

Lindsay Engelbrecht powered the Lancers by going 2-for-4 with 3-run home run and finished with four RBIs and two runs scored. Also having a big game were teammates Emily Unke (3-for-4), who had a double, three RBI and came around to score three times and Ryley Schetter (2-for-2), who added a pair of RBIs and a run scored.

MacKayla Menges earned the win for Lutheran, throwing all five innings while allowing seven runs — six earned — on eight hits.

The Lancers would score in every inning, plating nine in the first, one in the third and three in each of the third-fifth innings.

Next up for Lutheran will be a matchup with No. 1 Mishicot today with a D3 regional title on the line.

This will be the first meeting of the season for the Lancers and Indians after a game scheduled for May 16 was rained out.
