Uncharted territory isn’t so uncharted anymore.
Erwin (7-0, 3-0) and Mitchell Chancey (14.3 tackles per game) have a shot at their second 8-0 start in school history after their first shutout of this season – Friday’s 47-0 rout at McDowell.
Chancey continues to lead the Mountain Athletic Conference in tackles and C.J. Thompson had a 52-yard interception return for a touchdown in Marion. The Warriors were ahead, 33-0, at halftime and got 195 yards and two touchdown passes from Damien Ferguson.
The recipients of those throws were Isaiah Poore (12 yards) and Chase Austin (34). Malik Palmer added two touchdown runs and Colby Maltry had one.
Finally, Brendan McAnulty found Jarred Letman-Gash for a 5-yard touchdown pass at the 10:07 mark of the fourth quarter.
The previous 8-0 start for Erwin came in 2013, and prior to that the Warriors had a pair of 7-0 records before their first loss in 1962 and 2011.
Erwin hosts Roberson (4-3, 1-1) next week.
In addition to Chancey, other tackling leaders for the Warriors are Trevor Franklin (8.7 tackles per game), Rayonte Mills (8.0) and C.C. Robinson (7.8).
