Jeffersonville senior Gavan Jolley-Little and Corydon junior Bailey LaHue will be among the favorites to advance in the Indiana High School Athletic Association wrestling semistate on Saturday at the Ford Center in Evansville.

Jolley-Little (41-1 and ranked seventh in the state at 285 pounds) and LaHue (21-0 and ranked second at 120) are both chasing a return trip to the state finals at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Feb. 22.

The top four in each weight class will qualify for the state finals, meaning each wrestler must win his first two semistate matches to advance.

Jolley-Little will meet Brownsburg senior Zach Rumschlag (34-11) in the first round, while LaHue (a two-time semistate champion at 113 and 120) will face Crawford County junior Andrew Patton (33-7) in his opener.

Other Jeffersonville regional champions seeking a ticket to the state finals will include New Washington freshman Noah Franklin (35-2) at 106, Jeffersonville’s Joseph Deleon (26-21) at 126 and Floyd Central’s Austin Ward (30-3) at 132.

Girls’ swimming

Sectional champions from Floyd Central will compete in the IHSAA state finals at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis in tonight’s preliminary heat races. The state finals in all events are scheduled for Saturday.

All the local qualifiers will have to improve their seed rankings in order to advance. The top eight in each event will swim in the state championship race, while positions 9-16 will qualify for the state consolations.

The Highlanders will compete in six events, featuring Meg Taylor (24th in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:55.18 and 23rd in the 100 free in 53.18), Amy McCormick (23rd in the 500 free in 5:10.50), Maryn Meldrum (30th in the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.80), the 200 free relay (23rd in 1:40.21) and the 400 free relay (22nd in 3:39.85).

New Albany’s Stephanie Thom is seeded 26th in the 200 individual medley (2:11.03) and 21st in the 100 butterfly (57.49). North Harrison’s Bailey Seitz is seeded 31st in the 50 free (25.01) and Jeffersonville’s 200 medley relay is seeded 30th (1:54.04).

Diving regional

Jeffersonville’s Lauren Kessinger finished 13th (with a score of 231.15) and Floyd Central’s Sydney Baumann was 18th (201.55) during Tuesday night’s regional at Bloomington North. The top eight qualified for the state finals.

Boys soccer

Corydon’s Cory Thomas has signed with Indiana University. Thomas, a midfielder, holds Corydon’s school records for goals, points and goals in a game.

Girls track

Henryville’s Natalie Uhl has signed with Western Kentucky. Uhl finished 12th in the state in the discus last season.

Girls soccer

Providence’s Kasey Wallace has signed with Indiana State. She was a starter on Providence’s 2011 Class A state championship and the 2012 state runner-up. She missed her senior season with an injury.


John Edge has resigned as the athletic director at Mitchell. Edge, who also coached football for three seasons, served as AD for two years.
