The Arlington High School wrestling team captured the Section 1 Conference I League A championship with a 42-33 home win over John Jay on Friday.
“It was one of our goals,” Arlington coach Fred Perry said. “We’ve met it, (the team is) happy. They’re going to celebrate (Friday). (Today), we have a dual meet tournament.”
Arlington (17-3 overall, 4-0 league), which will compete in the Rondout Valley tournament today, won five contested matches and four by forfeit. Perry credited Dillon Sforza’s 6-4 overtime win over Dominic Testa at 126 pounds as the moment that “solidified” the title-winning victory.
“He was down 4-2, then he got a reversal in the third period to tie it up,” Perry said.
Brandon Badger defeated Brandon White at 170 pounds for Arlington’s only pin of the match.
“He wrestled a smart match, waited for his opportunity and took it,” Perry said.
Alfredo Olmedo (106), Coleman Lee (132) and Mario Zeppetelli (152) all decisioned their opponents for Arlington.
John Jay’s Jay Albis decisioned Brady Robin, 3-1, at 112, while Brett Perry (182), Andrew Anthony (220), Peter Pasqualini (120) and Tom Docherty (138) all won by pin. Grant Frederick earned an injury-default victory at 145.
