THE WINNER: Rachel Erickson
School: Cheyenne (Wyo.) East
Athletic achievement: She has led the Thunderbirds to a 13-2-1 record and a berth in the Class 4A state tournament against Natrona County, scheduled for May 22. The state’s returning Gatorade Girls Soccer Player of the Year, Erickson scored 13 goals and passed for 10 assists through 16 games. An All-Region selection by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, she is a three-time All-State and All-Region honoree.
Academic excellence: Erickson has maintained a 3.77 GPA.
Exemplary character: Also a basketball standout, she has volunteered locally on behalf of the Special Olympics and youth sports programs.
“She’s very physical and uses her size well, and she really knows how to finish,” said Carl Matson, head coach at Campbell County. “She makes herself known whenever she’s on the field. You always need a game plan against her.”
THE FUTURE: Erickson has signed with Black Hills State.
