Yorktown produced all five top individual finishers in the Delaware County girls golf tournament on Saturday at Muncie Elks Country Club, cruising to another title.
The Tigers’ Rachel Johnson was the tournament medalist, shooting 73. Teammate Morgan Clark shot 75 to finish second, and Reece Malapit posted 76 to take third.
Holly Haynes shot 84 for fourth and Maddy Kline shot 92 for fifth. The result was a 308 team score for Yorktown, 127 strokes ahead of second-place Wapahani, which shot 435.
“They played great,” Yorktown coach Brian Hill said.
Hill said he has been pleased with his team’s development so far. He’s looking forward to upcoming tournaments against some of the top teams in the state.
The Tigers are two years removed from winning the 2012 state championship. Yorktown finished fifth at state last year. Johnson and Clark were both in the lineup for the 2012 state championship team as sophomores and are now seniors.
Both players said they see plenty of potential in the Tigers’ current group.
“I definitely think we can make it into the top three (at state),” Clark said. “Hopefully we can do better than that, but our ultimate goal is to win it.”
Johnson has a similar thought.
“I think we are capable of winning sectional, hopefully capable of placing at regionals, hopefully winning regional,” she said. “I think state would be, always the goal is winning, that’s what you want to do. But second or third, that’s very capable also.”
Wapahani’s Haleigh Fernandez was the top non-Yorktown performer on Saturday, shooting 93. Delta’s Ashlie Powell finished seventh at 98. Wapahani’s Hanna Padgett shot 100 to finish eighth.
Delta finished third in the team standings at 454. Wes-Del was fourth at 471, with Daleville fifth at 540.
