Yorktown’s girls tennis team didn’t want to see its season end on Wednesday. A sweep of Burris ensures the Tigers will see another day.
The Tigers picked up the 5-0 win to end the Owls’ season at the Delta Sectional. Paige Swan, Halie Hardwick and Kate Avila combined to lose only two games as they swept the singles spots for Yorktown.
The Tigers earned the chance to face off with Central, a squad they have already beaten once this season. And Yorktown coach Bob Darby said he was pleased with the strong start to the state tournament.
“It’s always nice to get some momentum going,” Darby said. “If we continue to play well, we’re gunning for Delta. We’re a different team, it feels like, from when we first played them.”
He said he’d also seen improvements with the doubles squads, which both went to three sets with Burris. Delta will play Southside today on the other side of the bracket.
Patriots, Golden Falcons headed to finals
Jay County and Winchester will play today in the championship match of the Jay County Sectional. Jay County defeated Union City 4-1 on Wednesday, and Winchester edged Randolph Southern 3-2.
In other East Central Indiana action, Blackford and Blue River’s seasons each came to an end on Wednesday. Blackford was swept by Marion at the Marion Sectional, and Blue River fell to Knightstown 4-1 in the New Castle Sectional.
