Yorktown senior wrestler Rhett Hiestand was the only East Central Indiana wrestler competing in the finals of tonight’s IHSAA state championship, and he made good on his appearance with a little extra work.
Wrestling in the 160-pound division, Hiestand became a a state champion with a 2-1 victory against Cathedral’s Vinny Corsaro in a super sudden death period.
After the first period, Heistand and Corsaro were scoreless. And after the second, Corsaro led 1-0. But with 30 seconds remaining, the matched was tied 1-1. It remained tied after regulation and two minutes into extra time.
Because the match had so much extra time, it eventually ended in a rarely-seen situation in which Corsaro needed to escape to win. He could not, so Heistand won.
Hiestand finished the year with an individual record of 47-2, and Corsaro finished 48-1.
