Your guide to this week's prep scrimmages

Week 1 of high school football season is still two weeks away, which feels like an eternity. Even Jamboree Week, just around the corner, feels like it needs to hurry up and get here already. But that doesn’t mean there’s no prep football action this week.

If you’re a die-hard fan, you can check out local teams in action today and tomorrow in scrimmages. A full list is available here, but if you’re looking for the best options, start with these:

McDonogh 35 vs. Jesuit, 5 p.m., Tad Gormley Stadium

Ponchatoula vs. Holy Cross, 5 p.m., Pan American Stadium

How much more New Orleans does it get than Catholic League schools playing in some of the city’s most recognizable prep venues? If you go to Pan American, you get the added bonus of seeing Holy Cross’s Michael Chigbu, a standout wide receiver and Georgia commit.

Shaw at Mandeville, 5:30 p.m.

The game of the day on the Northshore.

West Jefferson vs. East Jefferson, 6 p.m., Joe Yenni Stadium

Another matchup in an iconic New Orleans stadium. The Warriors are fresh off their Class 4A state championship, but start a new journey without longtime coach Nick Saltaformaggio, who departed for Hahnville.

Salmen at Destrehan, 5:30 p.m.

The Wildcats lose QB Donovon Isom, who graduated and headed to Utah. But new signal-caller Marquise Darensbourg has a nice safety blanket in wide receivers Alfred Smith and Kirk Merritt, who combined for 1480 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns in 2013. If you’re looking for a scrimmage in the River Parishes, this is your best bet.

Riverside vs. St. Thomas Aquinas, 6:30 p.m., Strawberry Stadium (SLU)

Not only is it unquestionably cool to watch high school football in a college stadium, but there are very talented players on both sides. The Rebels return three outstanding receivers, including All-District selection Herb McGee, which should take some pressure off of freshman quarterback Jordan Loving. Meanwhile, the Falcons are led by Cameron Dantzler, who plays quarterback and linebackerand returns kicks, too.
