Destiny Elkins and the rest of the Mountain Heritage girls basketball team dug down deep Tuesday night to remain unbeaten.

The Cougars held hard-charging Avery County scoreless in overtime of a 48-42 home win.

The Western Highlands Conference game in Burnsville was knotted up 42-42 at the end of regulation despite earlier being 30-14 in Mountain Heritage’s favor at halftime.

Elkins scored 21 points, while Ciera Chandler added 11 and Kendy Neill had seven. Kylie Polsgrove (14 points) and Kesha Garland (10) were double-digit scorers for the Vikings.

Mountain Heritage (13-0, 4-0) was No. 2 in this week’s NCPreps.com 2-A poll and is the defending WHC champion.

Elkins is averaging 22.5 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. She was the 2014 WHC Player of the Year.
