Casey Nelson, Spanish Fork
So much for needing a year to gain experience. The tradition-rich Dons didn’t return a regular starter to this year’s team after losing in the 4A title game a year ago, but they returned to championship form despite a 1-6 start. Nelson’s crew was 16-14 overall, avoiding a losing record the glorious way — by going 5-0 in the state tournament.

Player of the Year
Payton Henry, C, Pleasant Grove, 6-2/215, Jr.
He could ruin pitchers … or become one. Henry hit .527 with nine home runs, 46 RBI and 11 doubles. He also had six saves in 11 innings pitched, even producing 13 strikeouts on the way to the Vikings’ first state title in 17 years.
