Curt Watkins, South Granville (Creedmoor)

Watkins guided his alma mater to a 25-3 record and its long-awaited first state baseball title. The Vikings captured the Class 2A championship series, taking two of three games from Randleman. They hadn’t reached the finals since 1982.


Player of the Year

Max Wotell, P, Marvin Ridge (Waxhaw), 6-3/190, Sr.

Wotell was drafted in the third round by the New York Mets after a thoroughly dominating season in which he helped the Mavericks to a 29-5 record and the Class 3A state championship. Wotell amassed an unblemished 14-0 record, owned a 0.54 ERA and struck out 120 batters while walking only 19 in 65 1/3 innings heading into the Class 3A state quarterfinals. Wotell batted .410 with three home runs, 19 RBI and 26 runs scored. He was also named the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year and MVP of the state championship series.
