SCOUTING REPORT

Strengths

The Vikings certainly bring a positive attitude into Dane Charpentier’s second season after going 10-2 last fall. It also helps that OC returns six starters on offense and five on defense.

Offensively, the Vikings return three starters in the backfield, including second-year QB David Labbe. Three starters are back on the line and one of the new starters is a returning varsity player on defense in DE Gaige St. Cyr. Another one of the “new” starters on offense is tight end Caleb Theriot, who had “an unbelievable summer at tight end,” and could be a major threat in the passing game this season.

Defensively, OC returns five starters, and one of the “new” starters is senior linebacker Brent Duplechain, who got significant time in a reserve role a year ago. Nick Mouret at cornerback and Aaron Whipp at free safety figure to be major pluses for the Vikings.

Question Marks

Like in so many Class 2A and 1A programs, “returning” starters can be a little deceiving. For instance, of the 11 returning starters, seven play on the other side of the ball as well, which mean depth is crucial at certain positions.

Injuries in the trenches, especially on the offensive line, could be a challenge.

The big question on defense is two new starters at strong safety, which are key positions in a 4-2-5 defensive alignment.

The schedule could be another issue for the Vikings. It wouldn’t require much of an imagination to picture a scenario where the Vikings would be improved this season and not have as good an overall record.

The Bottom Line

If the Vikings remain reasonably healthy, they should enjoy another successful fall. The passing game will need to make the hopeful strides in Labbe’s second season at quarterback to take pressure off the defense, especially in OC’s big challenges on the schedule.

The club’s physical mentality on both sides should serve it well in this new district, but the league does feature such powerhouses as Notre Dame, Catholic High of New Iberia and Loreauville. At least one very promising team will have to finish fourth.

Lagniappe

While depth indeed is an issue, the Vikings do sport “two or three” promising freshmen who could provide unusual depth, especially on the defensive line. Among that group is defensive tackle/tight end James Monroe.

David Labbe, QB, Sr.: Hard-nosed, linebacker-type quarterback who remains a physical rusher for the OC offense, but this year is more comfortable in the passing game. The Vikings are hoping Labbe’s second season as starting QB will produce a more explosive aerial attack.

Aaron Whipp, RB/FS/P, Sr.: Crucial performer for the Vikings. Whipp is the enforcer on defense as the unit’s free safety. On offense, he’s a starting running back and will be one of the offense’s leading rusher. And oh yeah, he’s also a returning starter at punter.

Caleb Theriot, TE/DE, Sr.: Returning starter at DE who will play there again, but may end up making his biggest impact this season as the new starter at tight end. As OC’s passing game strives to improve this year with a second-year QB, Theriot’s target at tight end could be critical.

Spencer Gardner, RT/DE, Jr.: Returning starter at right tackle, but is also expected to contribute at defensive end this season. The Vikings will be competing in a physical district against the likes of Notre Dame, Catholic High and Loreauville, so Gardner’s size is crucial.

Gaige St. Cyr, DE, Jr.: Another one of the key two-way starters for the Vikings. He’s a new starter at left tackle, but St. Cyr is back at defensive end already with a reputation of making trouble in opposing backfields.
