SCOUTING REPORT

Strengths

The mindset of the 2015 Westgate Tigers’ football team is sort of a strange dynamic. After all the trials and turmoil of a year ago with a host of injuries and dismissals, the resolve it took to play so many freshmen and sophomores last fall may end up producing an even more prepared and determined group this season.

Normally, starting two sophomores on offense and perhaps as many as six on defense would be a huge question mark, and it still is perhaps, but most of those second-year players started at least half of the games last season.

On paper, however, the biggest strength for Westgate is its offensive line with four returning starters back, led by a pair of college prospects in guard Taylor Fondal and tackle Malik Mitchell. The Tigers also return a wide receiver and a running back.

Westgate coach Ryan Antoine is hoping RB Trevon Doucet can help provide the explosive offensive threat out of the I-formation the Tigers have lacked in recent years. The passing game also figures to be aided by three talented tight ends who all can block and stretch the field, led by starter Payton Finley.

On defense, the Tigers have two sophomore returnees, a four-year starting linebacker and a returning star free safety. It’s only four, but it’s four elite playmakers for the Tigers.

Question Marks

In addition to all the sophomores, the first question is at quarterback. Gerald Broussard returns for his junior year, but he’ll be pushed by sophomore Jansen Mayea. Broussard is the dual threat, while Mayea is more of a pocket passer. Both are expected to play, maybe even at the same time on occasion.

While the four returning starters on defense are key figures, that still means seven new starters, including four sophomores in the secondary in the team’s 4-2-5 scheme.

Consequently, the two sophomore cornerbacks figure to be tested, but both are 6-3 and will present challenges of their own to opposing quarterbacks.

The Bottom Line

Don’t be surprised at all if the Tigers greatly improve record-wise after suffering through a 3-7 campaign a year ago. Antoine and his staff feel like they have a hungry, focused group this time around. Offensively, the Tigers should be able to push a lot of defensive fronts around and take a little more pressure off the defense than in recent years.

Defensively, the secondary is talented, but young. Preventing the big play is going to be a key, because the Tigers appear to be physical and talented enough upfront to create havoc on opposing offenses.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Westgate Players to Watch: Taylor Fondal, Trevon Doucet, Jaquandre Allen, August Gray and Malik Mitchell.

Westgate Players to Watch: Taylor Fondal, Trevon Doucet, Jaquandre Allen, August Gray and Malik Mitchell.

Taylor Fondal, OG, Senior: Division I offensive lineman prospect who is expected to help the Tigers dominate the line of scrimmage this season. One of four returning offensive linemen, but he stands out among the impressive group.

Trevon Doucet, RB, Senior: Known more for their elite defensive players than explosive offensive performers in recent years, the Tigers are hoping Doucet can change that a bit. Doucet brings some home-run speed to the Tigers’ backfield.

Jaquandre Allen, LB, Senior: Four-year starter with a 4.0 GPA who is a dual purpose performer for the Tigers’ defense – works as one of the best linebackers in school history and also has an extra coach on the field due to his experience and knowledge of the game.

August Gray, FS, Senior: An extremely fast last line of defense at free safety in the Tigers’ defense. One of four returning starters on defense who leads the defense with his 4.4 speed and aggressive mentality.

Malik Mitchell, OT, Senior: Another one of Westgate’s big, talented offensive lineman that is expected to provide the fuel for a more explosive offensive unit this season. Like his teammate Fondal, Mitchell should get a shot to play college ball.
