HOW WE SELECT THE ALL-AREA TEAMS
At the conclusion of each high school season, The News-Press staff sends area coaches a nomination form to select and rank players for our all-area
first teams and to also nominate athletes for second team and honorable mention. A combination of The News-Press’ research and the coaches’ player rankings lead to the teams being selected and three athletes are named finalists for player of the year. The three finalists and the first team honorees are invited to The News-Press All-Area Stars Banquet to be held June 7, 2016 at Germain Arena in Estero where the player of the year
will be announced.
Boys Golfer of the Year Finalists
Highlights: Farmer sported a 36-stroke average over nine holes and earned medalist honors in eight of his nine matches. In addition to winning his second straight Crutchfield/Hawkins Invitational in Sebring, Farmer fired a 2-under 70 at Magnolia Landing to win the Lee County Athletic Conference championship. He shot 70 at Stoneybrook Golf Club to win a district title and then tied for the low individual score at regionals to advance to state. He finished 14th out of 96 players at the Class 2A state championships at Mission Inn Golf Resort.
School: Fort Myers
Highlights: Weber returns as a finalist after taking third at LCAC and shooting a 3-under 69 to win the District 3A-15 title at River Hall Country Club. He carded a 76 at regionals, which was good enough for a fifth-place finish. At the 3A state championships, Weber managed a 79-94—153 and tied for 16th.
School: Bishop Verot
Highlights: Wheeler burst on the scene as a freshman, leading Verot to a District A-17 title by shooting a 3-over 75 and finished second as an individual at the Verandah. He went on to card a 1-over 72 and take second overall at regionals, making him the only Lee County player to qualify for the Class A tournament where he finished tied for 44th.
School: South Fort Myers
Highlights: Manning made a case for himself as one of the top players in Lee County when he finished second, two strokes behind Estero’s Luke Farmer, at the LCAC championships at Magnolia Landing. The sophomore carded an 82 at the District 3A-15 tournament at River Hall Country Club.
School: Evangelical Christian
Highlights: A Boys Golfer of the Year finalist last season, Reynolds repeated as District A-17 champion by shooting an even-par 72 at the Verandah, his home course. He missed out on qualifying for state after notching a 75 at the Region A-6 tournament in Bradenton.

Coach of the Year
Highlights: After losing seniors Michael Adams and Alden Gunder, Claman, a second-year coach, was left with a young Wildcats team. However, he found the right mix of players to fill in around No. 1 Luke Farmer. Estero took second at the LCAC tournament, third at districts and fourth at regionals. Claman has Estero headed in the right direction and appears on pace to having the Wildcats qualify for state as a team.
