Dover did not field a team in 2014. “The boys have been working hard and are eager to play in a competitive Section 9 for the first time since switching from Section 1. They have been showing improvements both offensively and defensively and are looking forward to finally getting outside.”

Franklin D. Roosevelt

Coach: Kory VanZandt

League: MHAL Division 1

2014 record: 10-9

Key returners: Alex Marinelli, Nick Rand, Matt Lahey, Isiah Nugent, Chris Hlavaty, Will Grega, Cory Simmons, Mike Boryk, Ryan Boryk, Kyle Zigner, Tyler Myers

Outlook: “We bring back a lot of experience from last year’s team,” VanZandt said. “This team knows that playing together with a desire and passion to win each time they step on the field will get them the results they are looking for.”

Haldane

Coach: Tom Virgadamo

League: Section 1 Conference 1 League C

Key returners: Justin Furdico, David Rotando, John Parr, Aidan Siegel, Brian Haines, Ryan Duffy, Jimmy Duffy, Nick Chiera, Miguel Toribio, Justin Maldonado

Key newcomers: Kyle Kenny, Anthony Sinchi, Daniel Rotando, Cameron Palikuca

Outlook: “The guys have passion for the game and want to do nothing less than win the fourth straight sectional title and advance back to the regional finals for the fourth straight year,” Virgadamo said. “We have a very young team (one senior, Furdico), but the chemistry and great attitudes will make up for a lack of experience. The lineup and pitching rotation most likely won’t be set until late April and we hope to gradually peak heading into sectionals.”

Highland

League: MHAL Division 2

2014 record: 9-8

John Jay

Coach: Eric Frink

League: Section 1 Conference 1 League A

2014 record: 9-12

Key returners: Nick Peterson, Peter DiMeglio, Antonio Pragana, Zack Zotolla, David Deberardinis, Matt Jones, Matt Aqualino, Mark Howell, Luigi Sinapi

Key newcomers: Jack Matero, Skyler Ohrvall, Dan Dimarzo, Joe Lisowski

Outlook: “We are attempting to create an environment of not taking off a rep during practice,” said Frink, a former John Jay assistant who takes over for John Giametta. Frink coached Peekskill from 1999-2006. “Ultimately to win a title, of which is tough in Class AA, we need to focus on us, get better daily, play good defense and pitch. If you pitch and play good defense, you will be in every game. We have great work ethic and guys are buying in, which hopefully lead to great success. We gained valuable experience last season as we had graduated over 10 seniors in 2013. Time to put that to good use and be more competitive.”

Marlboro

Coach: Dave Onusko

League: MHAL Division 2

2014 record: 14-5

Key returners: Scott Oliver, Kyle Cherubini, Matt Marquis, John Mooradian, Nick Mongelli, Cole Nicolis, Jack Rusk, Xavier Oliver

Key newcomers: Andrew Connors, Robert Parra, Tristin Ceriello, Joey Marshall

Outlook: “With eight key starters returning from last season, expectations are high,” Onusko said. “However, this 2015 team has not thrown a pitch, hit a single, or won a game. It will be the responsibility of the players to come to practice every day and work harder than the day before, to build on their strengths and strengthen their weaknesses. It will be left to the coaching staff to make sure their heads are clear, their eyes are focused, and they concentrate on the task at hand.”

Millbrook

Coach: Mike Setaro

League: MHAL Division 4

2014 record: 7-8

Key returners: Vinny Granuzzo, Brogan Revay, Matt Kyle, Kyle Cioli, Jesse Licurse, Garrett Pendleton

Key newcomers: Tyler Gangloff, Wally Cook, Andre Sousa, Jake Wright, Peter Blair, Ethan Martell

Outlook: “We have an evenly split squad of seasoned veterans and talented newcomers with an excellent balance of speed and power at the plate to complement strong arms and sound glove work in the field,” Setaro said. “With a deep pitching staff and a very versatile squad, we look to contend for the league championship and qualify for sectionals.”

New Paltz

Coach: Sam Phelps

League: MHAL Division 2

2014 record: 10-6

Key returners: Taylor Digilio, Seb Pannuto, Steve Branche, Nic Messina, Joey DiMarco

Key newcomers: Chris Baker, Mike Kenney, Antonio Fazio, Tyler Black

Outlook: “With our best returning player and pitcher just having shoulder surgery and the top JV pitcher having surgery last year and still unable to play, we have our back against the ropes,” Phelps said. “We will have to out-hustle (opponents) and play perfect to make sectionals for the eighth straight year.”

Our Lady of Lourdes

Coach: Derrick Damiano

League: Section 1 Conference 1 League A

2014 record: 11-9-1

Key returners: Joseph Cigna, Vin Savino, Dan Owens, Taylor Howlett, Dan Casey, Alex Castellano

2014 record: 8-11

Key returners: Joe Gentile, Aiden King, Steve Campbell, Lucas Redich

The Tigers are looking to repeat a sectional appearance and be competitive. I personally believe many teams will underestimate us and I look forward to hopefully proving them wrong.”

Pine Plains

Coach: Brendan LoBrutto

League: MHAL Division 4

2014 record: 5-12

Key returners: John Wheeler, Matt Pelletier, Tim Hennessy, Kyle Barton, Steven Cassarino, Aiden Ryan, Kennith Wheeler, Peter Ducillo

Key newcomers: Jeremy Sikula, Tyler Conley, Omar Mendez, Mike Orlandi, Matt Funk, Derek Koch

Outlook: “The guys have been working hard this spring to establish a fundamentally sound, hard-nosed brand of baseball,” said LoBrutto, a former Pine Plains player who led the Bombers boys basketball team to a Class C state final in 2013.

2014 record: 5-14

Key returners: Jon Mayorga, Lucas Ramos, Corey Simmons, Mark Weaver, Garrison Joern, Brandon Davies, Treyvon Stokes, Marcus Blocker

Key newcomers: Cullen O’Shea, Jake McCormack, Bryan Rodriguez, Joel Perez

Outlook: “We are excited to play our first year in the MHAL and are looking to be very competitive this season,” Bianco said. “The guys have dedicated a lot of time this fall and winter in the weight room and during open gyms. We have a great mix of seniors and freshmen are really stepping up and working extremely hard. This year, we have different options and depth at each position, which we haven’t had the luxury of the past few years. With returning players and newcomers, we are continuing to work hard, play hard, have fun and be competitive in the MHAL. As a whole, we are very excited to suit up and get going in both our non-conference and conference schedule.”

Rhinebeck

Coach: Nick Nikolatos

League: MHAL Division 4

2014 record: 12-8

Key returners : Sean Martin, Chris Cassens, Hunter Brandt, Ryan Euell, Spencer Hutchins

Key newcomers: Peter Dunn, Josh Martin, Tor Kronbichler, Cameron Mimoso, Andrew Tyson, Aidan Hack, Matthew Martin, Laurence Graziano, Matthew Montero

Outlook: “The strength of our team is having depth in positions, which allows our more flexible position players to play other positions,” said Nikolatos, who is a longtime member of Rhinebeck’s staff, who last served as head coach in 2011. He replaced Bill Carney, who remains with the program. “Our pitching depth is not as deep as last year, but our goal is to win the division and be a contender for a section title.”

Roy C. Ketcham

Coach: Pat Mealy

League: Section 1 Conference 1 League A

2014 record: 23-4

Key returners: Tim Zehnbauer, Dylan D’Anna, Greg Blum, Matt Lynch, Nick Shepheard, Rob Clerc

Key newcomers: Jonathan Cepeda

Outlook: “After losing two-thirds of our starting lineup, we have a ton of holes to fill,” said Mealy, whose team won the Section 1 Class AA title last season and made it to a state semifinal. “Our goal is always to win our league and our section, but most importantly, to get better every outing.”
