There a number of area games every week that are worth watching, so it’s difficult to narrow the list to five. For various reasons, here are five that intrigue me:
Aug. 21 — Southport vs. Roncalli: The second game of a doubleheader at Lucas Oil Stadium features these Southside rivals. Will Paul Scruggs’ basketball skills translate to receiver for Southport? We’ll find out. Does Roncalli look the part of a potential Class 4A title contender? This will be a great test.
Aug. 28 — Avon at Ben Davis: Avon can take a measure of confidence from a 34-27 loss to Ben Davis in last year’s sectional. Can the veteran Orioles take the next step? These teams could very well meet again down the road in Sectional 5.
Sept. 11 — Ben Davis at Center Grove: After Ben Davis dominated the regular season meeting last year 28-0, these teams staged one of the more entertaining games in recent years as the Giants won a 49-45 thriller in the semistate. There’s a lot to like about both these Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference powers and it starts up front.
Oct. 2 — Cathedral vs. Fishers: Football at Victory Field? Awesome. Brownsburg and Hamilton Southeastern will also play at the home of the Indianapolis Indians on Oct. 16. Cathedral-Fishers would be a great matchup anywhere. Both teams are capable of winning a sectional and beyond.
Oct. 9 — Warren Central at Carmel: The names change but this one is always worth watching. Here’s why: The teams have split the last 10 meetings with the games decided by a total of 45 points with three going to overtime. Never a dull moment.
