MURFREESBORO – Five Rutherford County baseball standouts were honored with all-state status by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association.
Riverdale’s Dylan King and Siegel’s Blake Benefield were named to the Class AAA team. On the heels of their third straight state tournament appearance, Central Magnet placed two on the Class AA team in Darek Sargent and Jordan Jackson.
Eagleville ace Christian Hill, a Freed-Hardeman signee, was named to the Class A team.
King, who was named The Daily News Journal’s Pitcher of the Year as well as the District 7-AAA Pitcher of the Year, went 7-1 with a 1.49 ERA and had seven complete games with four shutouts. He struck out 80 and walked just four batters. The Belmont signee was a 25th-round draft pick of the New York Mets.
Benefield, an MTSU signee, was named The DNJ’s Position Player of the year. He was named to the all-state team as an infielder. He played third base and outfield.
Benefield was also the District 7-AAA Player of the Year after leading the Stars in virtually all offensive categories. He hit .429 with five home runs, 11 doubles, four triples, 25 runs scored and 34 RBIs.
Sargent, the Tigers’ shortstop, was named the District 8-AA Player of the Year. He hit .426 with 43 runs scored, four home runs and 45 RBIs. Jackson hit .466 in his first season as a starter for the Tigers. He had 37 RBIs and 46 stolen bases this past season.
Hill went 7-1 with a 1.33 ERA with 88 strikeouts for the Eagles. He was also the District 9-A Pitcher of the Year.
