OKEECHOBEE — The Okeechobeee Brahmans defeated the Bayside Bears 65-58 on Friday in a game that needed five overtimes to be decided. The game will go down in the record books as the longest, and highest-scoring, game in the history of the area.
The Bears are still seeking their first victory this year. However, on the bright side, the 58 points they scored were more than in their previous seven games combined.
Bayside had scored a total of 43 points across the first seven games, with nine points being the highest total in any one game. All of that changed Friday night, but the team still couldn’t grab the W.
There were times Friday when the win was so close they could practically grab it. The Brahmans committed 13 penalties and fumbled the ball eight times.
Despite jumping ahead by two touchdowns in the first seven minutes, the Brahmans never ran away with the game and allowed the Bears to tie things up in the third quarter.
After a nerve-wracking game, Okeechobee head coach Chris Branham felt that his team should have handled the Bears long before overtime.
“To be honest, I felt like we shouldn’t have gone into overtime,” he said. “We should have won that game in regulation on multiple occasions.”
The Bears looked poised to win the game in the third overtime as they just needed a field goal. However, despite an otherwise solid night, Bayside kicker Rachel Van Mier missed the potential game-winning field goal.
In the end, it was a Bayside fumble that Okeechobee recovered on the one-yard line that gave the Brahmans the win and sent the Bears home still searching for their first win.
“If they didn’t fumble, we could still be here. I think that could have gone into eight, 10, 12 overtimes,” Branham said.
Even though the Brahman players were very happy about the victory, Branham knows that his team has an awful lot to work on moving forward.
“If you walk in that locker room you’re going to see a lot of kids that are questioning themselves and ready to get back to work on Monday,” he said.
