Can the Comets get off to a strong start?
Coming off a winless season the Comets are seeking a quick start to the year. Two of West Liberty’s first four games come against teams (Tipton and Monticello) that finished below .500 a year ago.
What will the offense look like under first-year head coach Jason Iske? The Comets will feature a different offense in long-time assistant coach Jason Iske’s first season in charge. The question is what the Comets’ offense will exactly look like and, more importantly, how effective it will be.
Will senior Josh Walshire flourish under center? Four the fourth straight year West Liberty will have a new starting quarterback for the season opener. This year senior Josh Walshire has the inside track to the quarterback job, but has attempted just five career passes. How quickly Walshire grasps the reins of the offense will be important.
How much better will the defense be? The question isn’t if the Comets will be better on defense, — they will be — the question is how much improvement will be made after West Liberty allowed 38.2 points per game last season.
Was last season’s winless record an anomaly? Last year’s 0-9 mark snapped a string of four consecutive playoff appearances for the Comets and came after West Liberty went 17-15 over the past three seasons.
