One way or another, an awful lot has to get done in the District 5-2A softball race this week.
Currently, the Delcambre Lady Panthers are 11-4 overall and 4-0 in district play.
In other words, the Lady Panthers are backed into getting five games played this week and then still must finish off a suspended game with Opelousas Catholic that ended 4-4 in the 10th from earlier this year.
Opelousas Catholic, meanwhile is 9-14 overall and 5-1 in district play with Catholic High, Loreauville and Delcambre on the slate this week.
Catholic High of New Iberia is also hoping to claim some portion of the 5-2A title at 13-10 overall and 6-2 in district play.
“It’s all going to come down to this week,” Delcambre coach Keith Morgan said. “All three of us are pretty good teams. I think all three will be in the playoffs no matter what happens this week, and maybe even a fourth team.”
Morgan’s Panthers are currently No. 6 in the state power rankings, followed by Catholic High No. 18, Opelousas Catholic No. 26 and Westminster Christian No. 27.
Delcambre is scheduled to play at Westminster on Tuesday, host Catholic High on Thursday, host Opelousas Catholic on Saturday and somehow fit in a rained out doubleheader with Jeanerette.
“It’s been a lot of fun,” said Morgan, who is in his first year at Delcambre. “The transition has gone pretty smoothly. The girls here already knew the fundamentals of the game. That made it a lot more fun. That allows you to take your game to the next level.”
Taylor Trahan, who has a pair of no-hitters to her credit this season, is Delcambre’s leader in the circle. Offensively, the Lady Panthers are led by Trahan, catcher Nicole Bouillion (.380), leadoff hitter Holly Deranger and Haley LeBlanc.
“She (Deranger) is one of the top slap lead-off hitters that you’re going to find,” Morgan said.
Delcambre is led by a solid group of eight seniors.
“The biggest thing for us is that we can’t take anyone for granted,” Morgan said.
Catholic High’s challenge is a little different with only two games left, but they’re big ones – at Opelousas Catholic on Tuesday and at Delcambre on Thursday.
“It’s a real big week for us,” Catholic coach Mark Suire said. “We’re hoping to get a piece of the district championship.”
It’s been a long, bumpy ride for Suire’s Lady Panthers so far this season.
“We went through some trying times earlier this season,” Suire said. “I asked them to fight through it and they have. I think all of that is going to pay off for them.”
Consistency has been an issue for Catholic, playing 18 different lineups in 23 games due to injuries, different activities and players having to play various different positions.
Hannah Smith has missed 13 games and is expected back for this last stretch run to help out hitting leaders Payton LeBlanc (third moving to second), catcher Hunter Musso (team-high 3 HRs) and shortstop Taylor Jeanlouis (.400).
With five slappers in the lineup, Smith’s return is crucial to provide more pop in the lineup.
In the circle, Catholic is led by two-headed monster of Maddie Hoag and Meghan Robicheaux. Hoag is more of the classic change-of-speeds pitcher and Robicheaux more of a power pitcher.
“We’re starting to get the little things down,” Suire said. “We just need to get over the hump. I think we’re close.”
