Undefeated NCHSAA 1-A champion Robbinsville put three players on the NCPreps.com 1-A all-state team which was announced Monday.
The Black Knights (16-0) will forever be known as the first Western North Carolina football team to win 16 games in a season despite being picked to finish third in the Smoky Mountain Conference coaches poll last summer.
They are represented on the NCPreps team by Austin Hedrick (offensive line), Skyler Matheson (linebacker) and Cruz Galaviz (defensive back).
Robbinsville beat Plymouth, 21-18, in the 1-A state championship game on Dec. 13 in Raleigh. The Black Knights have won an area-best 13 state football titles, but last year’s was their first since 1992. The previous school record for single-season wins was 13.
Matheson was also the team’s quarterback and named the most valuable player of the NCHSAA 1-A championship game. Fellow senior Galaviz was the SMC Back of the Year and Hedrick, who is a junior, was the SMC Lineman of the year.
“These kids deserve everything they are getting,” Robbinsville coach Dee Walsh said.
“We’re happy for all of them, especially Cruz and Skyler who are seniors. It’s been their life’s passion to be a football player.”
SMC runner-up Murphy had two NCPreps.com all-state selections – Malachi Beaver (offensive line) and Tyler Wiley (defensive back).
Finally, Shrine Bowl pick Tre Jackson from Avery County was tabbed as a punter.
