USA TODAY High School Sports is launching a series called “60 for ’16” to highlight 60 members of the Class of 2016 who we will be watching in the coming 12 months. The athletes were selected by the USA TODAY HSS staff.
Name: Sierra Brooks
School: Lake Mary Prep (Fla.)
Sport: Girls Golf
What we’ve seen: Brooks lost the Florida state title in a playoff as a freshman and was nowhere near the title as a sophomore. However, the Wake Forest commit won the elusive Florida’s 1A championship as a junior, leading Lake May Prep to the team title as well. Brooks was recently named the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Girls Golf Player of the Year and continues to be on a roll.
Why we’re watching: Brooks is set to compete in her fourth Wyndham Cup, which has brought together 40 of the country’s top junior golfers in an East-versus-West team match play tournament since 1990. The four-time Rolex Junior All-American will enter with a strong match-play record, including a 6-5-1 record in her three previous Wyndham Cups.. She won the 2014 Polo Golf Junior Classic, tallied a 2-1-0 record for the victorious Junior Ryder Cup team in 2014 as a captain’s pick.
In January, she claimed first at the Women’s South Atlantic Amateur championship (The Sally). To top it off, she brought home another trophy at the 100th edition of the Women’s Southern Golf Association Amateur in June, which attracted a top field of players from 15 Southern states and the District of Columbia.
After a summer full of events, Brooks is poised to repeat as a state champion in Florida.
