American Family Insurance ALL-USA Arizona point guards Markus Howard and Alex Barcello, both top 2017 national prospects who were engaged in one of the best games of last basketball season, are on the fast track to further national stardom this summer with big plans in store.
Howard, 5-foot-11, who has left Gilbert Perry after leading the state with 32.4 points a game to continue his high school career at national power Las Vegas Findlay Prep, presently is in Colorado Springs, hoping to earn a ticket to Argentina for FIFA America U16 Championships.
He is in the midst of the USA Basketball Under-16 national camp that runs through June 6. The FIFA Americas U16 Championships are June 8 and 9 with USA competing against Brazil, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
Tempe Corona del Sol’s Barcello, 6-2, who has 14 scholarship offers, including six in two days after averaging 24 points in the Adidas Gauntlet Series this spring for Team Bayless, will play in June in the NBPA Top 100 at the University of Virginia and in July in the Adidas Uprising All-American camp for the top 100 in New York.
The only time Barcello and Howard played against each other last season, Corona del Sol outlasted Perry 106-92 in a game in which Barcello had 51 points and Howard 47. Shortly after that, University of Arizona coach Sean Miller offered a scholarship to Barcello.
Howard, who made All-Arizona in his first two high school seasons at Perry, received mid-week scholarship offers from Indiana and Memphis.
