Three members of Section 4 Class AA champion Horseheads are among 11 area players who have been named to the New York State Sportswriters Association all-state baseball team.
The team was announced Tuesday evening.
Horseheads picks in Class AA were sophomore shortstop Nico Limoncelli (third team), junior pitcher Jake Burlingame (fifth team) and senior second baseman Matt Smith (seventh team). They were instrumental in a 19-4 season for Horseheads that included a 7-3 victory over Corning in the Section 4 Class AA championship game.
Limoncelli batted .440 with 18 runs, 22 stolen bases, 10 doubles, two triples and 15 RBIs. Burlingame was 6-2 with a 2.58 ERA as a pitcher, and he batted .375 with six doubles, two triples and 10 stolen bases. The slick-fielding Smith hit .476 with 12 runs, 11 stolen bases and 10 RBIs.
Joining them on the Class AA team were Corning junior pitcher Dan Madden (sixth team) and Corning senior shortstop Ryan Walker (eighth team). They helped the Hawks to a second straight Southern Tier Athletic Conference West Division title.
In Class B, Thomas A. Edison senior catcher/pitcher Josh Cosgrove was a third-team pick. He was a big part of the Spartans’ run to the Interscholastic Athletic Conference South Large School Division title. Cosgrove batted .424, scored a team-high 28 runs, hit five doubles, stole 13 bases and drove in 20 runs from the leadoff spot. He had a 3-0 record as a pitcher and struck out 44 batters in 25 innings.
Waverly had three all-state selections in Class B: junior shortstop Peyton Miller (sixth team), senior first baseman Kyle Kinsley (seventh team) and sophomore outfielder Brendyn Stillman (eighth team).
Elmira Notre Dame senior pitcher Parker May was a second-team Class C selection. Also for the Crusaders, senior first baseman/outfielder Cameron Reid was chosen to the fifth team.
May batted .400 with seven doubles, three triples, 11 RBIs and a .526 on-base percentage. As a pitcher, he was 6-4 with 127 strikeouts in 75 1/3 innings and a 1.49 ERA. Reid batted .400 with 25 runs, a homer, 13 stolen bases and a team-high 16 RBIs.
First-team all-state picks from Section 4 were Susquehanna Valley senior outfielder David Matthews in Class B, Binghamton Seton Catholic Central senior catcher Tyler Krowiak in Class B, Tioga sophomore shortstop/pitcher Parker Hendershot in Class C, Tioga senior pitcher/infielder Peter Simmons in Class C and Hancock junior pitcher/outfielder Ryan Slatcher in Class D.
Senior left-handed pitcher Kumar Nambiar of Mamaroneck, who tossed a complete game against Horseheads in the state quarterfinals, was named Class AA Player of the Year. He led Mamaroneck to the Class AA state title and his coach, Mike Chiapparelli, was named Class AA Coach of the Year.
Other Players of the Year were Frankie Vesuvio of Byram Hills in Class A, Joe Tardif of Mattituck in Class B, John Rooney of Hoosic Valley in Class C and Vincent Ciaravino of Smithtown Christian in Class D.
