Scottsdale Prep point guard Ben Arqueros poured in 37 points leading his team to a 76-72 overtime victory Saturday over then-No.1-ranked (Division IV) Phoenix Country Day and making him top performer for the week of Jan. 5-10 in boys basketball.
Here is a look at the weekly honors:
Ben Arqueros, Scottsdale Prep, G: He surpassed 1,000 career points before scoring 37 points and handing out 10 assists in the big Division IV showdown against Phoenix Country Day.
J.J. Rhymes, Phoenix Shadow Mountain, G/F: The 6-foot-4 junior had 24 points in a win against Phoenix South Mountain and 25 points in a win against Phoenix Arcadia. He also had 17 rebounds and six assists against Arcadia.
Chris Bowling, Gilbert, F: The 6-7 junior had 20 points, including the go-ahead 3-pointer in overtime, leading the Tigers to a 62-56 win at Mesa. He also had three steals.
Daniel Corona, Duncan, G: He had 31 points in a 62-45 Division IV win over Superior.
Christian Hakilimali, Phoenix Cortez, F: The 6-foot-3 senior had 20 points, 17 rebounds, five assists and three steals in a 74-67 victory over then No.1 (Division III) Fountain Hills.
Rod Springer, Sierra Vista Buena, G: He had 22 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in an 80-58 win over Tucson Sabino, followed by 17 points, five rebounds and four assists in a 64-54 win over solid Division I team Chandler.
David Beecher, Mesa Mountain View, C: The 6-7 senior had 27 points and seven rebounds in a win over Phoenix Horizon on Thursday and 15 points and eight rebounds in a victory Friday over Yuma Cibola, helping the Toros get to 10 wins.
K.J. Hymes, Phoenix St. Mary’s, C: The 6-9 freshman had his big break-out game in a 62-44 rout of Phoenix Camelback, scoring 31 points, grabbing seven rebounds and blocking four shots.
