NEWPORT – In a season in which the Newport Central Catholic football team has struggled to find wins, Erik Anderson has found ways to make big plays.

The NewCath senior has stepped up with some clutch moments in each of the team’s three wins so far this year. Oct. 9 against Holy Cross, Anderson had a touchdown catch to stake NewCath to a 14-6 lead, then he intercepted a pass in the final seconds to preserve a 20-13 win in NewCath’s Class 2A district seeding opener.

“We appreciate what he does,” said head coach Dan Wagner. “He’s a good athlete. We try to put him in a place where we think they’re going to go and they went after him and he made a nice play. He’s got a lot of athletic ability and we try to get him a place where he can use it.”

Anderson, a tall, long-armed presence, plays receiver and defensive back. In NCC’s first win of the year, a 28-19 win over Campbell County, Anderson had a key interception return for a touchdown, and he caught four passes for 24 yards.

In a 47-7 win over Harrison County, he had three catches for 86 yards and a score, and also intercepted a pass in that game.

Anderson has four interceptions for the year and one fumble recovery. He has three total touchdowns and more than 20 receptions and 200 yards for the season.

“He does really well,” Wagner said. “At a small school, you have to play both sides. He’s a good receiver and a good punter, but our other kid is a little bit better. There isn’t much he can’t do. He can catch the ball and he has enough speed if he can get a breakout.”
