Andrews preview: Wildcats ready for challenge of SMC

ANDREWS – Just about everything a football team could want is accounted for at Andrews.

Third-year coach Avery Cutshaw rattled off his squad’s strengths as “senior leadership with size, strength and speed.”

That and more will be necessary for the Wildcats to do well in the Smoky Mountain Conference.

SMC coaches have picked Andrews to finish seventh in the league. The Cherokee County program’s last conference championship season occurred 32 years ago.

“People can say what they want, this conference is the toughest around,” Cutshaw said. “And we want to compete with the upper-tier teams. We feel like we can be competitive.”

To that end, Andrews has a good core of 13 returning starters (seven offense, six defense) back from last year’s team that went 3-9 overall and 2-4 in the SMC.

Senior Dillan Ward should be one of the biggest offensive weapons — the linebacker/running back was an honorable mention All-SMC player in 2014, as were junior defensive back/wide receiver Drew Pyle and senior lineman Willie Parker.

Running back Taylor Parker, who is a junior, and sophomore Dillan Phillips have been among the contenders to play quarterback.

Tyler Rose is back at receiver, as is fellow senior James Hoke at tight end.

Along with Parker, senior Tyler Holloway has experience up front, and two newcomers are expected to contribute on the offensive line as well — sophomore Zane Wood and senior Cameron Debty.

Ward, along with seniors Derek Bateman and Grayson Parker, were starting linebackers as juniors. Ward averaged 6.7 tackles per game, followed by Bateman (5.7) , Parker (5.7), Pyle (5.7) and Grayson Parker (5.4).

Andrews’ first game is Aug. 21 at Brevard.
