Ben Simmons and Antonio Blakeney have been on the same travel team, will be teammates in the McDonald’s All American Game on Wednesday and will be teammates at LSU in the fall.
While Simmons from Montverde (Fla.) Academy has won numerous national awards, including the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Player of the Year, Blakeney took Mr. Basketball in the state of Florida on Tuesday.
Blakeney, from Oak Ridge in Orlando, received six of 19 first-place votes for a total of 156 points. Simmons had seven first-place notes and 114 points. Ryan McMahon, a Louisville commit from Cardinal Mooney, was third with 112 points.
Blakeney, the state’s 8A player of the year, averaged 29.0 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game for an Oak Ridge team that went 22-7 and lost in the regional finals.
Simmons’ numbers were 28.9 points, 11.9 rebounds and 4.0 assists. Montverde is ranked No. 2 in the USA TODAY High School Sports Super 25. Simmons was named the state’s independent schools player of the year.
