In Division II, Glendale Apollo scored three times in the first 3 minutes and rolled over Glendale Deer Valley 39-25.

Jayson Robertson scored three touchdowns and ran for 168 yards to key the win.

“We just got rolling and got some breaks,” Robertson said. “We knew they had lost their starting quarterback so we thought they would have to play it simple.”

Robertson got Apollo (5-2, 2-0) going, scoring on a 59-yard play to start the game.

Marc Cruz’s kick put Apollo in front 7-0 with 9 minutes, 26 seconds to go in the first quarter. Apollo scored again on Deer Valley’s first play from scrimmage when Deer Valley quarterback Kyler Angst threw a pass that was tipped into the hands of Apollo’s Andrew Katzenberger, who galloped 30 yards for a 14-0 score after the kick with 9:04 left.

“After it was tipped, I just grabbed it and ran,” Katzenberger said. “The line then just opened it up for me to go in for the touchdown.”

Apollo struck again just 3 minutes later when Adam Pieri scored on a 69-yard play that put Apollo up 21-0. Cruz then kicked a 35-yard field goal with 10:22 to go in the second quarter that put Apollo in front 24-0.

Robertson scored his second touchdown on a 36-yard run that put Apollo in front 31-0 with 4:31 to go in the second quarter.

Deer Valley (2-5, 0-2) finally got on the board when Julian Botello kicked a 37-yard field goal to end the quarter with Apollo on top 31-3.

Deer Valley got its first touchdown with 1:28 to go in the third quarter when Llian Roberts scored on a 2-yard play making the score 31-10 after Botello’s kick. Robertson’s final touchdown was a 49-yard run to finish Apollo’s scoring with 11:50 to go in the fourth quarter making it a 39-10 score.

Deer Valley’s Drew Griggs (20 carries for 94 yards) added a 3-yard touchdown, and Taliannuu Tanal scored on a 3-yard run with a conversion making the final 39-25.

Deer Valley’s Angst finished the game 9 of 17 for 112 yards and two interceptions.
