Four Greenville County players were among those chosen to play in the 79th Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas high school football all-star game.
Greer wide receiver Dorian Lindsey and defensive back Troy Pride were named to the team, along with linebackers Tori Delesline of Hillcrest and Jeremiah Ferguson of Southside.
The selection of Ferguson gives Southside a Shrine Bowl player for the first time since offensive lineman Travis Jones was chosen in 2000.
“It means a lot, because we’re still trying to get respect,” said Southside coach Julius Prince, whose Tigers recorded back-to-back non-losing seasons for the first time in 19 years in 2013 and 2014 and are 5-1 heading into Week 7.
“Our kids get overlooked for all-star teams and college teams because of our history. Our kids are just as good as everybody else’s kids.”
The 6-foot, 210-pound Ferguson is a four-year starter and Southside’s defensive leader.
“He’s a super competitor,” Prince said. “He’s not fast, but he’s excellent as getting to the football. He’s a sideline to sideline guy.”
Delesline (6-2, 206), who has committed to Georgia Southern University, led Hillcrest’s 2014 state championship team with 154 tackles and is averaging more than 15 tackles per game again this season for the Rams, who lost for the first time in a year this past weekend against Westside.
Pride, a Virginia Tech recruit, and Lindsey are two of the most versatile of the Yellow Jackets and have led their team to a 6-0 record and a No. 3 ranking in Class AAA.
Pride (6-0, 165) has scored three touchdowns rushing, three receiving, three on punt returns (on four returns) and one on an interception return.
Lindsey (6-0, 180), who starts at cornerback with Pride, has three interceptions, along with 23 receptions for 442 yards and six touchdowns.
Also selected were Byrnes wide receiver Chavis Dawkins and defensive back Jaylan Foster, as well as Daniel offensive lineman Cade Stewart and Pickens punter/kicker Matthew Gravely.
The rosters were annnounced today for 2015 game, which is scheduled for 1 p.m. Dec. 19 at Gibbs Stadium on the campus of Wofford College.
Berea’s Wayne Green will serve as the head coach of the South Carolina team. Among his assistants will be Greer’s Will Young and Timberland defensive cooordinator Bill Boroff, a Hillcrest graduate.
