Red Devils pound Giants in sweep

After trailing by a run early, Richmond broke through in the fifth inning to defeat Marion 18-1 in the Red Devils’ NCC opener Saturday, before completing a doubleheader sweep with a 10-0 five inning victory.

Jordan Christian pitched five innings in the first game, striking out four, walking three and surrendering one earned run on two hits, while Bryce Austin pitched the final two innings, striking out two, walking one and allowing no hits.

Kyler Helms struck out 10 in the second game, going the distance and allowing two hits.

“I can’t say enough about our pitching,” Richmond head coach Tyler Lairson said. “In five games, I think we’ve scored 58 runs and have only given up three runs, so I can’t say enough about our pitching staff. The other thing I was pleased with today, we were error-free on a rough surface, so anytime you go on the road and play error-free baseball, you’re going to give yourself a chance to win.

The Red Devils also had 13 stolen bases in the second game with Isaak Snyder, Tanner Marlow and Parker Holland swiping three apiece.

Snyder went 4-for-6 with three RBIs and a double in the first game, then was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a double in the nightcap.

Jared Drayton was 3-for-4 in the first game and 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs in the second. Chris Larson was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a double in the first game and 2-for-2 with an RBI in Game 2; Chandler Whalen was 2-for-4 with four RBIs in Game 1; Holland was 3-for-3 with a double in Game 2 and Austin went 2-for-5 with two RBIs on the day.

“We got off to a slow start. I thought we struggled making adjustments early to their pitcher, but I thought we got back to our game and putting a little pressure on them and that kind of opened the floodgates,” Lairson said. “I thought we squared the ball well all day.

Richmond (5-0, 2-0) travels to Muncie Central on Tuesday, before hosting the Bearcats in Game 2 of the NCC series Wednesday at McBride Stadium.
