Three area soccer teams, including both squads from Elmira Notre Dame, will attempt to earn berths in state semifinals Saturday.
The unbeaten Notre Dame boys (18-0) travel to Chittenango High School in the Syracuse area to meet Section 3 champion Thousand Islands (16-1) in a Class C state quarterfinal at 2:15 p.m. Notre Dame is ranked first in the state in Class C and has outscored its opponents 166-4 after downing Lansing 8-1 in the Section 4 final.
Saturday’s winner advances to the final four at Middletown High School on Nov. 14 and 15.
Also at Chittenango on Saturday, Cincinnatus faces Cherry Valley-Springfield in Class D at noon, and Chenango Forks meets Skaneateles in Class B at 4:30. Tickets are $8 for the day.
Notre Dame’s girls will have a shorter trip, with the Crusaders (16-1) visiting Vestal High School to meet Section 3 champion Sauquoit Valley (20-0) at 4:30 p.m. in a Class C quarterfinal. Sauquoit Valley is ranked first in the state, with the Crusaders seventh. Notre Dame has allowed just four goals all season and is coming off a 4-1 victory over Lansing in the Section 4 final.
In Class AA girls soccer, Corning (11-5) takes on Section 9 champion Monroe-Woodbury (16-3-1) at 3 p.m. Saturday at Johnson City High School. The Hawks advanced to the state tournament with a 3-1 win over Elmira in the Section 4 final.
Saturday’s girls winners go to the state final four Nov. 14 and 15, with games in classes C and AA played at Tompkins Cortland Community College in Dryden, Cortland High School and SUNY Cortland.
Corning hosts sectional finals: Corning-Painted Post High School will be the site of three Section 4 championship matches Saturday.
The tripleheader starts at 3 p.m. with the Class B championship between Owego and Maine-Endwell. At 5 p.m., Tioga meets Harpursville in the Class D final, followed at 7 by the Class C final between Oneonta and Windsor.
Corning-Painted Post will host four state regional matches Wednesday, which is Veterans Day. The day starts at 11 a.m. with the Class AA match between Corning and the Section 9 champion, followed at 1 p.m. by a Class A match between Horseheads and the Section 9 winner. The Class B match will start at 3 p.m., with Class C at 5.
