Teams from the Upstate saved their best for last on the courts at Palmetto Dunes during the recent USTA South Carolina Combo Doubles League State Championships.

Some 2,700 players from clubs, parks, recreational departments and other sports organizations throughout the state converged on Hilton Head Island for the mid-October tournament.

Winners in the 18-and-over, the 40-and-over and the 55-and-over age groups will represent South Carolina at the Southern sectional tournament next March in Alabama along with some teams awarded wild cards.

The 65-and-over 6.5 level men’s team from the Upper Piedmont Tennis Association (UPTA), with captain Ron Younts, returned home with a championship. The team beat captain Claude Beauregard’s UPTA squad in the final.

The UPTA women’s 65-and-over 6.5 level team, with Henrietta Walker as captain, won its division.

The Greenwood Area Tennis Association’s 55-and-older 7.5 men’s team, with Rodney McAlister as captain, won a state championship. The team defeated the Spartanburg Area Tennis League squad (Alan Lyles, captain) in the final.

The Foothills Tennis Association’s squad in the 55-and-over 6.5 women’s division (Shay Jenkins, captain) was a runner-up in the tournament. The 55-and-over 6.5 team from GATA (James Rhodes, captain) was a runner-up in the men’s division.

Captain Angie Hill from the Foothills Tennis Association’s 40-and-over 5.5 women led her team to a championship. The Spartanburg Area Tennis League’s 40-and-over 6.5 men, with Paul Hendrix as captain, also brought home a state title. His team defeated captain Davis Harrelson’s UPTA squad in the final.

In the 40-and-over men’s 8.5 division, the UPTA squad (George Auger, captain) was runner-up. The Foothills Tennis Association’s 40-and-over 7.5 women (Lee Ann Wilson, captain) were finalists but received a wild-card entry to advance to the Southern championships.

Another UPTA team returning with a finalist award was the 18-and-over 5.0 women (Katherine Mattice, captain) as did GATA’s 18-and-over 8.5 men (Drew Mundy, captain).
