Southwest Michigan will be well represented at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Wrestling Individual Finals, as 22 area grapplers moved on after Saturday’s regional round.

The top four wrestlers from each weight class advanced to the Individual State Finals at The Palace of Auburn Hills, March 5-7.

The area produced one regional champion on the day in Todd Myers of Climax-Scotts/Martin, who won the 145 pound championship at the Division 4 regional at Cassopolis-Ross Beatty. The Climax-Scotts/Martin co-op squad is also the lone local team to be represented at the MHSAA Wrestling Team Finals at Kellogg Arena, Feb. 27-28.

Division 1 at Howell

Lakeview: The Spartans’ Brendan Stevens is moving on to the state finals after a runner-up finish at 103 pounds.

The top-ranked wrestler in his class, Stevens pinned Walled Lake Northern’s Jarett Grenstein as well as Hartland’s Noah Lopez before he lost a narrow 13-11 decision to fifth-ranked Nick Freeman of Walled Lake’s Central in the finals.

“He had a tough chart. He’s got three or four in his weight class at this regional that were real tough,” Lakeview coach Chris Dunham said of Stevens. “Upsets all day on the charts. He had a tough finals match. But there is still no reason that he can’t be standing on top of the podium March 7.

Division 2 at Eaton Rapids

Battle Creek Central: The Bearcats’ Jacob Taylor (171 pounds) and Kenny Grayer (152 pounds) advanced with second- and third-place finishes, respectively.

The seventh-ranked Taylor won a major decision over Austin Hutchison of Eaton Rapids, then pinned fourth-ranked Will Feldcamp of Dexter before being pinned by top-ranked Logan Massa of St. Johns in the finals.

Grayer won by decision over Dalton Hilliker of Lansing Catholic before a semifinal loss to sixth-ranked Blaine Milheim of Eaton Rapids. He then won his consolation semifinal over Noah Jakubas of Jackson Northwest before topping Coldwater’s Jesse Miller with a decision in the consolation finals.

Harper Creek: The Beavers’ Joey Ramos fought his way to a fourth-place finish to move on at 140 pounds. He earned a void in the quarterfinals, lost via tech fall to Stevensville-Lakeshore’s Noah Hanau, then won his consolation semifinal match by way of a decision over Sturgis’ Zach Mathews. He lost by decision to Fowlerville’s Kyle Roberts in the third-place bout.

“Mitch (Coon) hurt his ankle, and he still wrestled his last match on one leg. And Jacob (Bishop) went 2-2 on the day,” Harper Creek coach Dave Studer said of his other wrestlers. “With Joey, it was a good surprise. I thought we could sneak all three of them through, but it was tough up there.”

Coldwater: The Cardinals’ Jesse Miller (152 pounds) and Zach Chehowski (160 pounds) moved on by way of fourth-place finishes.

Miller lost a decision to Blaine Milheim of Eaton Rapids before earning a major decision over Dalton Hilliker. He then won a 5-3 overtime decision over Quintin Smith of Niles before losing the third-place bout to Kenny Grayer of Battle Creek Central.

Chehowski lost a decision to fourth-ranked Tristen Elkins of Jackson Northwest, followed by a decision over Jacob Clark of Mason and a decision over Fred Kemp of Niles. He lost by tech fall to seventh-ranked Luke Carver of Sturgis in the third-place match.

Division 3 at Allendale

Pennfield: The Panthers’ Nick Schwarz (189 pounds) and Taylor Dean (285 pounds) punched their ticket to The Palace with a pair of runner-up finishes.

Schwarz won a major decision over Nate Jones of Stanton Central Montcalm and then earned a pin over Jarrod Teague before lsoing a decision to fifth-ranked Jon Nielsen of Allendale in the finals.

The eighth-ranked Dean won a decision over Kyle Vandenbrooks of Remus Chippewa Hills and then earned a pin over Gabriel Wadsworth of Alma before losing by tech fall to seventh-ranked Trent Montambo of Shelby in the finals.

Delton Kellogg: The Panthers’ Jacob Reed (152 pounds) and Tyden Ferris (215 pounds) advanced by way of third- and fourth-place finishes, respectively.

Reed opened with a decision over James Oboyle of Shepherd, followed by a decision to top-ranked Brandon Dyke of Allendale. He then won a major decision over Olivet;s Mateo Palacios before getting past second-ranked Jordon Bennett of Lake Odessa Lakewood by way of injury default in the third-place match.

Ferris won a decision over 10th-ranked Jon Spedowski of Remus Chippewa Hills before being pinned in the semifinals by JayCee Frisbie of Belding Area. He bounced back with a decision over Luke Tromp of Lake Odessa Lakewood before losing a decision to eighth-ranked Evan Skiver in the third-place bout.

Division 4 at Cassopolis-Ross Beatty

Climax-Scotss/Martin (co-op): The Panthers/Clippers will send four wrestlers to The Palace, led by regional champion Todd Myers at 145 pounds. Also moving on for Climax-Scotts/Martin are Dayton VanderPloeg (second at 112 pounds), Zack Mobley (fourth at 152 pounds) and Ethan Simmons (fourth at 215 pounds).

The 10th-ranked Myers won a decision over Corbin Eckenberger of Niles-Brandywine before pinning Brad Yazel of Watervliet. In the finals, he won a 7-2 decision over Trentyn Gleason of Hesperia Community.

The ninth-ranked VanderPloeg pinned Owen Flowers of Decatur, won a decision over seventh-ranked Rogelio Segundo of White Pigeon, then was pinned by fourth-ranked Jeremiah Durian in the finals.

Mobley pinned Ty Cool of Mendon, followed by a loss via pin to top-ranked Hunter Bell of Decatur. He then won a decision over Ryan Vanderlaan of Grandville Calvin Christian before dropping a decision to sixth-ranked Zack Taubitz of Blanchard Montabella in the third-place bout.

The seventh-ranked Simmons pinned Trenton Kane of Marcellus, then lost a decision to eighth-ranked Tymari Brown of Cassopolis-Ross Beatty. He bounced back with a decision over ninth-ranked Mason Bolt of Kent City before losing the third-place match via decision to Charlie Rodriguez of Niles Brandywine.

Division 4 at Manchester

Bronson: The Vikings will send an area-best five wrestlers to The Palace, with Kahle Scheenks (135 pounds) finishing runner-up, Nathan Caudill (215 pounds) and Brett Burtrum (171 pounds) placing third and Wesley Disbro (125 pounds) and Jukoada Sexton (171 pounds) placing fourth.

The fourth-ranked Scheenks won a decision over Michael Petee of Sand Creek, then won a major decision over Zech Johnston of Clinton before losing by decision to 10th-ranked Nick Dettling of Manchester in the finals.

Caudill won a decision over Logan Pickles of Sand Creek, then was pinned by Thomas Krueger of Lutheran Westland. He bounced back with a pin over Nic Glinn of Lutheran Westland and then a pin over Austin Popp of Clinton in the third-place bout.

The second-ranked Burtrum won a major decision over Jordan Good of Manchester, followed by an overtime loss to seventh-ranked Nick Cooper of Springport. He followed with a decision over Garrett Vansickle of Adrian Madison before winning the third-place match via injury default against teammate Jukoada Sexton.

Disbro won a decision over Terry Burns of Sand Creek, then lost a major decision to fourth-ranked Tyler Roberts of Hudson Area. He followed with a major decision over Miguel Grammatico of Manchester before losing via tech fall to third-ranked Marcus Richardson of Addison in the third-place match.

The sixth-ranked Sexton opened with a major decision over Will Toland of Sand Creek, then dropped a decision to eighth-ranked Clayton Brockway of Hudson Area. He bounced back with a decision over Jordan Good of Manchester before losing via injury default to teammmate Brett Burtrum.

Homer: The Trojans will send three wrestlers to the state finals, led by a runner-up finish from Wyatt Stout at 160 pounds. Also advancing are Garrett Warner ( fourth at 135 pounds) and Austin Yeakey (fourth at 160 pounds).

Stout won by fall over Austin Penn of Erie Mason, followed by a decision over David Chantelois of Clinton before falling to No. 2 ranked Trevor Humphrey of Manchester in the finals.

Warner was pinned by 10th-ranked Nick Dettling of Manchester, then received a bye before earning a pin over Zech Johnston of Clinton. He lost the third-place match to Noah Nieman of Blissfield via injury default.

Yeakey opened with a decision over Aaron Pifer of Adrian Madison, then was pinned by second-ranekd Trevor Humphrey of Manchester. He came back with a pin over Austin Penn of Erie Mason before losing by decision to Aaron Pifer of Adrian Madison in the third-place match.
