Arizona freshman sets state record with 14 treys in win

Arizona has a new single-game three-point record holder. It’s just not anyone who could have been predicted.

As reported by Arizona ABC affiliate KNXV, Janae Gonzales, a freshman sharp shooter for Sierra Linda, hit 14 three-pointers during her team’s 103-14 rout of Tempe. The 14 treys accounted for nearly all of Gonzales’ impressive 51 points.

According to statistics compiled by MaxPreps, Gonzales is averaging more than 17 points-per-game during her first varsity high school season, and has emerged as one of the primary offensive threats for an 18-2 Sierra Linda squad that has emerged as a bona fide state title contender.

As for her performance in the record-setting game, Gonzales said that she was actually surprised by her ability to connect for a simple reason: She came out of the locker room and was cold from the free throw lines in warmups.

“When I was warming up, I actually missed quite a few throws so I thought, man, this is going to be pretty tough,” Gonzales told KNXV.
