Has a 2.7 GPA … Plays free safety for Cesar Chavez’s football team … Had two interceptions and 11 total tackles against Desert Edge on Nov. 20 … Transferred from Agua Fria before attending Cesar Chavez … Had three interceptions in the first-round playoff game against Tucson Sabino, and he returned two of them for touchdowns, during the first playoff victory in the school’s history … Second-leading tackler who averages 20 yards in punt returns … Competes in the 100-meter, 200-meter and sometimes 4×400 relay, triple jump and long jump in track and field … First-team all-region player as a junior … Community volunteer who helps coach young athletes on AZ Saints, a youth alliance football team … Hopes to gain more weight and muscle for next season and work on his footwork and GPA … Said football has taught him to see character in others and to never quit … “Every play is an opportunity for him,” coach Jim Rattay said. “He goes full speed, and he gets double-figure tackles.”

Has a 4.53 GPA … No. 1 singles badminton player at Xavier … Beat two-time state champion Karen Guo from Desert Vista twice this season, one at the Independence Invitational and one on Oct. 28 in the semifinals of the state championship, helping Xavier win the team title for the third year in a row … Trained over the summer, which taught her that hard work pays off … President of Calculus Club, vice president of Gatortown and attendance chair of Student Ambassador Club … Member of National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Xavier Environmental Response Organization (XERO), National French Honor Society, IT Club and Badminton Club … Volunteers at the Arizona Humane Society … National Merit Semifinalist … Cambridge in England is her dream school, but is still applying for colleges to study molecular biology, neuroscience or computer sciences … Said she will miss her friends who are on the team … Plans to compete in December tournament at the Arizona Badminton Center with a friend … “She has a quiet demeanor, but she’s a fierce opponent,” coach Nancy Meyer said.

Has a 3.96 GPA … Took third place at District Meet on Oct. 31 … Achieved provisional state times in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke … Takes AP and Honors classes … Ranked third in her senior class … Secretary for the National Honor Society … Clarinet section leader for Sunrise Mountain’s marching band … Swim team captain who coordinates athletes for special practice and meeting times … Volunteered with Sunrise Mountain Branch library over the summer … Began swimming when she was 6 years old in club swim … Wants to attend John Hopkins or Washington for math and music … Coach Cris Dilworth said Ruka doesn’t identify herself with her scores and times, making Ruka a humble student-athlete … Ruka said swim helped her gain leadership skills and grow from being a shy freshman, to an outgoing energy behind the team … Loved being part of a community of support in swim … “She knows what it takes to do well individually,” Dilworth said. “But she cares how the rest of the team does, as well.”
